Emergency Medicine Residency

The Emergency Department (ED) at John Peter Smith Hospital (JPS) provides outstanding care for the highest acuity patients in Tarrant County. Faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine (EM) provides Residents with exceptional education and broad clinical experiences to include best practice management strategies for both common and uncommon presentations.

All EM Faculty are ABEM or ABOEM certified or eligible. JPS provides the only ED in Tarrant County with 100% Board Certified/Eligible Emergency Physicians attending 24/7/365. The American College of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) approved our program in July, 2009 as the largest EM Residency startup ever. We matched our inaugural class of twelve Residents on March 17, 2011. All graduates enjoy a variety of competitive community and academic positions.

Our Residents receive and contribute to the highest quality education available in areas such as Critical Care, Trauma, and ED Administration serving both Adult and Pediatric patient populations. The JPS EM Residency Program is dedicated to graduating the new leaders of medicine – making a difference now and well into the future.

JPS Health Network has a long tradition of residency training and resident participation in scholarly activities. We take pride in our multiple grant-funded investigators that mentor Residents regarding study design, statistics and implementation. JPS maintains a full-time staff of research Nurses to assist with IRB applications, patient enrollment, and data collection and input.

Residents are required to engage in scholarly activity and provide a research product of publishable quality as a prerequisite to graduation. This may take the form of textbook chapters, case reports, original peer reviewed journal articles or another scholarly activity as approved by the Program Director and Research Committee.

Regularly scheduled scholarly activities include:

  • Monthly Journal Club
  • Grand Rounds Lecture Series
  • NetLearning Modules
  • Emergency Medicine Research Rotation
  • Participation in local, regional, and national symposium to include TCEP, ACEP, SAEM, AAEM, EDBA, JPS, and IES sponsored research presentations

Fourth year medical students may apply online using VSAS for elective clinical clerkships.
