Residents who choose obstetrics and gynecology as their specialty know that commitment to women’s health is a complex equation that can lead to rewarding experiences and challenges and new developments in medicine. Providing the whole picture of health for women of all ages is a vital part of the health care goals of JPS Health Network. Patient care is our number one priority and the driving force behind our mission to transform healthcare delivery for the communities we serve. To that end, the educational mission of the OBGYN residency program is paramount – to educate residents so they are not only excellent practitioners of OBGYN, but also superior candidates should they pursue a career in the subspecialties of reproductive endocrinology and infertility, maternal-fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, or female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. The JPS Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program offers county and private hospital exposure at every care level in a system that has more than 4,000 births each year. As JPS is the public hospital system for Tarrant County, residents see and treat a wide array of pathologies. Our services, setting, and mission are putting all the pieces of the woman’s health picture together. We provide graduate medical education that frames obstetric and gynecologic medicine together in one location.
BREADTH AND SCOPE
The JPS OBGYN program is an ACGME fully accredited four-year residency with 16 residents (4 per year). The program is committed to providing OBGYN residents with a breath of knowledge and hands-on training in not only their specialty, but in a variety of subspecialties that provide them opportunities to excel within field. The curriculum covers all of broad primary care in addition to experience in REI, MFM, Gynecologic Oncology and FPMRS. The program provides residents a scope of experience that will benefit all the stages of a woman’s health care needs.
Currently, the department consists of:
- 16 Residents (4 per PGY level)
- 15 Generalist Obstetricians and Gynecologists
- 1 Gynecologic Oncologist
- 1 Reproductive Endocrinologist
- 4 Maternal-Fetal Medicine Specialists
- 1 Female Pelvic Medicine & Reconstructive Surgery Specialist
- 1 Internal Medicine Specialist in Hematology Oncology
- 10 Nurse Midwifes
- 16 Nurse Practitioners
UNIQUE ASPECTS OF THE PROGRAM
A key element setting JPS apart from many other programs is its team concept that not only delivers educational access and practical experience, but also providers a reservoir of on-site knowledge and information from which to draw. This approach to patient care involves a close working interdisciplinary relationship between OBGYN faculty and residents, family medicine residents, advanced practice providers, and medical students. Residency core teams consist of:
- 2 generalists OBGYN faculty
- 2 OBGYN residents – PGY2 & PGY 4
- 1 family practice fellow
- 1 OBGYN intern or 1-2 family practice residents
- Medical students
The residency teams have the following structure:
- 10 to 12-hour work days on average
- 2 days per week in L&D
- 1 OR day per week, 4 OR days per month
- 2-3 clinic days per week
- 3 weeks of day shift and 1 week of night shift
- Minimum of two weekends off per month
- Direct faculty supervision of teams with small resident-to-faculty ratio
- Direct one-on-one operating time with generalist and subspecialty faculty
- Office procedure experience including colposcopy and dysplasia treatment and office hysteroscopy
- Formal ultrasound training with MFM department
Beginning with the intern year, robotic surgery training for our residents involves a unique curriculum that allows them to use the daVinci robotic surgery system. With enhanced optics and dexterity, the robotic system allows surgeons to address more complex cases through a laparoscopic approach, thus improving post-operative pain control and shortening recovery time. All graduating residents receive certification in robotic training.
